Q&A

How do I register for a class?

All students must submit a registration form and activity waiver. You can register online here.  Please make sure to read our student/parent manual, as you’ll be asked to sign on the registration form that you agree to abide by the policies detailed in the manual.

How is a student placed for a class/lesson?

Art, Musikgarten, and acting class placements are based strictly on age – no experience required. Private music lessons are tailored to the individual student’s age and level, although most of our teachers do have a minimum age for students. Dance placement for students 7 and under is based on age. Students 8 and up are placed on a variety of factors, including age, past experience, natural ability, focus, attendance, and more. You can call our office to set up an evaluation for class placement. (256) 353-0423, ext. 157.

How much does it cost?

The cost of tuition for classes varies, and each private music instructor sets his/her own monthly tuition rates. Tuition rates can be found on the individual webpages for each class or lesson. All School of Fine Arts families pay an annual $40 registration fee at the beginning of the fall semester (or upon enrollment if registering later in the year.)  This fee is paid once each year and covers all immediate family members participating in classes or camps, August-July. Dancers are also required to pay recital and costume fees.

Where do classes meet?

All of our classes and private lessons meet at First Baptist Church Decatur, 123 Church Street NE, Decatur, Alabama. We have three dance studios and numerous classrooms used for instruction.

What will I do while my child is in classes/lessons?

Parents are not required to stay during classes and lessons. We only require that you return promptly to pick up your child. We also welcome family members to stay on the First Baptist Decatur campus during a child’s class/lesson. Seating is available on each floor of the church. We offer a coffee bar area on the first floor for those who would like to enjoy quiet time. For families who need a place to visit, play, or eat, the Recreation Outreach Center (ROC) on the second floor is open with game tables and snack machines.

Are there performance opportunities?

Yes, we believe performance is an important experience in the development of young artists! All of our dancers perform in our annual dance recital, held the Saturday after Memorial Day. Private music instructors also schedule end-of-year music recitals for their students, typically sometime in April or May.
